Exploring The Chelsea Masquerade

A collection of notes on the “most exciting project in World Football” (says whoever gets a promo code in exchange of a few propaganda tweets on social media). Yes we see you.

With a point deduction looming (for the transfer shenanigans of the previous administration), and a 500 million loan at 12% interest rate contracted to fund whatever that squad is (“to compete in every matchup”) which will likely be repaid through the inevitable sale of Colwill or Palmer, the future isn’t as bright as a few wins against some of the weakest Premier League displays in recent memory might suggest.

So, what has changed? Once you look past the grand storytelling, not much.

What truly matters is not the destination, but the friends we made along the way.

And friends, there are plenty—not just a few.

  • Chelsea are this close to greatness

  • One or two world class signings, and Chelsea will compete for the title

  • Chelsea is on par to enter the Guinness World Record Book for… bookings

  • How open are Chelsea defensively?

  • Let’s dance

  • Where we’re going, we don’t need [set piece specialists]

  • The BlueCo Playbook

  • Groundhog day

  • Less chaos, less penalties, more draws

  • If you don’t like my principles, I have others

  • Quick subs?

  • Palmer FC – Has Maresca turned it worse?

  • Caicenzoméo

  • Another lap for the concept car ?

  • Same casting, same conclusions

  • Pochettino get everyone injured

  • Maresca found the cure for eternal life

  • Where to go from there?

Bonus

  • How easy is to play against an Enzo Maresca team? (May 2024)

This is a different perspective than the 2024 long read:

Chelsea are this close to greatness

Well, they better be, as according to Spotrac, Chelsea currently have the 2nd or 3rd biggest wagebill, take it or leave it a few millions

Whilst both Manchester United and Liverpool have been decreasing theirs, Arsenal and Aston Villa increased their payroll to qualify for the Champions League.

Chelsea and Manchester City have been fairly consistent. Getting rid of Lukaku, has been well made up by adding Felix, Tosin, Dewsbury and the likes of Guiu on the aggregate, keeping BlueCo’s franchise in the same place.

The correlation between wage expenditure and success is well documented in sport.

Giving more money to donkeys won’t turn them into racehorses overnight, and will only align expectations with the reality of the situation. You’ve got to compete, or question the allocation of ressources. Or you’ll be called “1 Billion bottle jobs” on national television.

You can’t forever echo lines you’re fed about ‘“average age” or “controlled spending”.

Chelsea never quite stopped being juggernauts, just replaced their squad consistently finishing top 4 between 2018-2022 by an entire new squad that is yet to achieve the same feat – in three seasons of ownership

Because you really didn’t think Felix and Sancho were unpaid interns, did you?

All that hassle to try to win the Hudson-Odoi vs Sancho debate in big year 2024.

We have been there before. London talents who stayed in London, won the FA Youth Cup(s) and UEFA Youth League. London talents who had to move elsewhere, didn’t.
